LASIK surgery offers benefits to people who enjoy active lifestyles at work or play. LASIK surgery has corrected or
improved the vision of millions of people. Our studies show that over 98% of patients who have had vision correction surgery are able to pass a standard driver's license eye exam (20/40 visual
acuity or better) without corrective lenses.
The goal of vision correction surgery is to provide excellent vision, some patients may desire to wear lenses after surgery for some activities.
The name LASIK is short for laser in-situ keratomileusis. It utilizes the excimer laser to reshape the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism.
Eyecare Associates utilizes the VISX® Star S4 ActiveTrak Excimer Laser system offering:
- Variable Spot Beam Technology: Variable-shaped beams ranging in size from 0.65 to 6.5 millimeters are
scanned* and offset to allow personalized refractive treatments.
- Exclusive SmartBeam technology adjusts beam size according to treatment, minimizing corneal tissue removal.
- ActiveTrak 3-D Active Eye Tracking: The only laser system that can capture all three dimensions of eye movements.
- Larger Ablation Zones: VSS (Variable Spot Scanning) technology adds a blend zone that
increases the ablation zone by 51%, increasing the -overall diameter of the ablation to 8 millimeters.
The excimer laser is a "cool light" laser used to remove
microscopic amounts of tissue with extreme precision. The laser is computer controlled, accurate, and fast (typically 20 to 30 seconds).
Once your eye is numbed with drops, a microkeratome stabilized by gentle suction, is placed on the surface and passed across the cornea, creating a protective flap.
The microkeratome is removed from the eye and the surgeon gently lifts the flap. After lifting the hinged flap aside, the corneal bed is inspected for smoothness, gently cleaned, and prepared for
the excimer laser.
The excimer laser beam, after being preprogrammed for the appropriate correction, is applied to the corneal
bed. Laser energy is generated to reshape your cornea. You will not feel any pain.
At the end of the laser treatment your corneal flap is gently
replaced and carefully aligned back into its original position.
Enjoy your new vision.
LASIK is the most advanced method of treating refractive errors because of it's accuracy, predictably and results. Other alternatives do exist and they are:
- Glasses
- Contact Lenses
- Radial Keratotomy (RK)
- Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)
- Keravision Intacs
- Phakic Iols
- Clear Lensectomy
- Laser Thermakeratoplasty [LTK) with Holium YAG Laser
- Other developing investigational procedures
The qualified staff at Eyecare Associates will provide you additional information on the applicability of any of these
procedures to improve your vision.
